My jaw surgery process will take about 15 months from start to finish. The healing process will take a bit longer, one year after surgery, as the nerves regenerate and my entire face feels “normal” again without any trace of tingling or numbness. Here’s a little profile of the Toronto-based doctors who will be helping me along this process.
Maxillo Facial Surgery – Dr. Claudio Tocchio
I was referred to Dr. Tocchio
by my orthodontist. Dr. Tocchio will perform my surgery at North York General Hospital
. His resume is very impressive
and if it weren’t for all of the wonderful things I’ve heard about him leading up to my first consultation, I may have pulled the plug on the whole process. I initially met with Dr. Tocchio six months ago (in June of 2012) for a consultation during which he recommended Lefort 1 Osteotomy Possible Segmental and Bilateral Mandibular Sagittal Split Osteotomy Advancement
. I attempt to explain this type of surgery here
. He is very confident and compassionate and instills a feeling of trust. A few days before my surgery I was looking into his eyes as he was taking final measurements and asked myself “Do I trust this doctor to literally rearrange my face?” Yes, I did. I am so glad he was my surgeon, he’s amazing. He’s compassionate and takes time to answer my questions. He has a great sense of humour as well which goes a long way in the process. A few weeks after my surgery, I broke down in tears in his office because I thought I was ugly. He was so sympathetic that I swear there were tears in his eyes as he told me to hang on, and I did and he was right, it didn’t only get better, it got amazing. I am so fond of him and will miss him after our final visit.
Orthodontics – Dr. Christopher G. Cameron
I’ve been under the care of my Orthodontist, Dr. Cameron
, since June of 2012. With any jaw surgery, there is usually a pre-surgical phase where the teeth are aligned and ideally positioned. Then there is a post-surgical phase where the bite is detailed before treatment is done. My pre-surgical phase was estimated to take 9 to 12 months and at the time of surgery I had been in braces for 9 months. Whenever they gave me the option of returning in 3-4 weeks, I always chose 3 and I believe this sped up the process. I can expect to be de-braced around 6 months after surgery (around September 2013). He was able to secure a surgery date for me faster than the usual wait. He did a spectacular job with my teeth which helped the surgery and post-op result. My experience with Dr. Cameron and his team has been amazing. He is really the best at what he does. His team is so professional. I never have to wait more than 5 minutes in the waiting room. He did a spectacular job and I would recommend him to everyone I know.
